Choosing flooring starts with the substrate

Levels, flatness, thresholds and material: checks that come before format and colour.

01 / PRACTICAL GUIDE

Retain or remove the existing covering

The choice depends on adhesion of the existing covering, available levels and compatibility of the system. Adding a new finish changes heights at doors, thresholds and adjoining rooms. Removal allows work on the substrate but adds operations and material to handle. These are distinct scopes that need separate descriptions.

02 / PRACTICAL GUIDE

Read the room, not just its area

For the same floor area, recesses, columns, laying patterns and cuts affect the work. Specify the intended format, skirting, joints and connections to stairs or doors. Room area does not necessarily equal the quantity of material to purchase: requirements also depend on the laying pattern and cutting waste.

Check what the proposal includes

Separate supply, preparation, laying, grouting and skirting in the quotation. Check which substrate repairs are included and how concealed conditions discovered after removal will be handled. Use and cleaning guidance must refer to the selected products and the time they require before being put into service.
